VA Back Pay Calculator (2026)
Estimate the retroactive VA disability compensation you may be owed from your effective date, using the official VA rate tables for 2023 through 2026.
How VA back pay works
VA back pay is compensation for payable months after your effective date and before VA begins the new regular payment. Under the general rule in 38 U.S.C. § 5111, payment begins on the first day of the calendar month after the month in which an award or increase became effective. The law contains narrow exceptions, so your VA decision notice controls.
The key distinction is between the effective date and the first regular payment date. This calculator skips the effective month under the general rule, then counts payable months up to—but not including—the month regular payment begins. For an increase, it uses only the difference between the old and new rates.
VA compensation rates change every year on December 1, adjusted by the annual cost-of-living adjustment (COLA). If your back-pay period crosses a December 1 boundary, each month is paid at the rate that was in effect during that month — earlier months at the older rate, later months at the newer rate. The calculator above walks through this rate year by rate year so you can see exactly how the total is built.
Your monthly rate also depends on your dependents. Veterans rated at 30% or higher receive additional compensation for a spouse, children, and dependent parents; ratings of 10% and 20% are paid at a single flat rate with no dependent allowance. All figures in this tool come directly from the official VA compensation rate tables linked at the bottom of the page.
Frequently asked questions
How does VA back pay work?
VA back pay (retroactive pay) covers payable months after the effective date of an award or increase and before regular payment begins. Under the general rule in 38 U.S.C. § 5111(a)(1), payment starts on the first day of the calendar month after the month in which the award became effective. Each payable month uses the VA compensation rate then in effect. Narrow statutory exceptions can change the start month, so VA's decision controls.
How long does VA back pay take?
According to VA, if your decision notice shows at least a 10% disability rating, you will get your first payment within 15 days of the decision. VA does not promise on that page that retroactive compensation will arrive in the same deposit, so use your decision notice and payment history for actual back-pay timing. Total processing time before the decision varies by claim.
What is the largest VA back pay?
There is no fixed maximum. The amount depends on two things: how large the difference is between your old and new monthly rate, and how many months passed between your effective date and your first payment. A high rating with a long wait produces the most. For example, at the December 1, 2025 rates, a 100% rating for a veteran with a spouse and one child pays $4,318.99 per month, so each additional month of delay adds that much to the back pay.
Can VA back pay be over $100,000?
Yes, it is possible when a high rating is combined with a long retroactive period. At the December 1, 2025 rate of $3,938.58 per month for a 100% veteran with no dependents, roughly 26 months of back pay would exceed $100,000. Cases with several years between the effective date and the decision, or with dependents, can reach that range.
Do I get back pay for a VA disability increase?
Usually. When VA grants an increase, retroactive pay generally starts with the calendar month after the assigned effective month and continues until the higher regular payment begins. It is based on the difference between the old and new monthly rates. Enter your previous rating so the calculator subtracts the amount you were already receiving.
Do I get back pay for a supplemental claim?
If a supplemental claim is granted, back pay is generally paid from the effective date VA assigns to that claim. A supplemental claim can sometimes preserve an earlier effective date, which increases the retroactive period. The exact effective date depends on your filing history, so the retroactive amount follows whatever date VA sets.
